Preschool Program

Corpus Christi Preschool is a nonprofit, non-sectarian, multi-racial organization, licensed by the Department of Social Services of Michigan.  The preschool operates a full program at the Corpus Christi Center.  The purpose of this program is to provide preschool experience based on the High Scope curriculum.  The High Scope program is based on Piaget's theories that children develop through active learning and a variety of hands-on experiences.

High Scope Curriculum
  • Self-reliance-to develop the ability to make decisions about what they are going to do and how they are going to do it.
  • Emotional development-to develop self-discipline and the ability to identify personal goals so they can pursue and complete self-chosen tasks.
  • Social interaction-to develop the ability to work with other children and adults so that the work don is a result of group planning, cooperative effort, and shared leadership.
  • Creativity/communication-to develop the ability for self-expression; enabling them to speak, write, dramatize, and graphically represent their experiences and to communicate these to others.
  • Cognitive-to develop at the ability to apply their reasoning capability in a wide range of situation, using a variety of materials.
  • acceptance of others-to develop children's spirit of inquiry and an openness to knowledge and the points of view of other people.

High Scope Program Elements
  • Active Learning-Hands-on experiences for the children is the cornerstone of the High Scope Program.
  • Key Experiences- Categories include language, experiencing and representing, classification, seriation, number, spatial relationships and time.
  • Room Arrangement-The room is divided into different work areas and interest centers such as block, art, kitchen and other activity centers so that the children can find and use materials of particular interest to them.
  • Daily Routine-A consistent routine is the framework and provides a "Plan-Do-Review" sequence.  Interaction is in small groups, between adult and child, and between child and child.  Children are encouraged to work in a variety of environments.  This challenges their existing abilities.
  • Child Observation-By observing individual children within the learning environment, adults are able to develop and implement teaching strategies geared to the needs of each child.
  • Parent Involvement-Parents are encouraged to visit the preschool and volunteer their time, thus becoming an active part of the program.  Conferences will be scheduled during the year and parents may meet with he preschool staff when necessary.
  • Communication/newsletters-Parents will be kept informed of daily and monthly activities by means of individual children's files, and the teachers' newsletters.
