For the second consecutive year, Corpus Christi Catholic School has met/exceeded the standards set by the State of Michigan (Michigan Public Act 301 of 2010) to earn a Michigan Green School designation. A minimum of two activities in each of four categories must be completed or ongoing in order to qualify. In the first category: Reduce/Reuse/Recycle/Renewable Energy, the school logged in 5 different activities, including recycling programs for paper, plastic, cardboard, printer cartridges, batteries, and cell phones/digital cameras/iPods. The school also reuses magazines and newspapers for art projects, and recycles pop cans and water bottles. Third grade students toured the Padnos Recycling facilities. And, the CC Eco Club is sponsoring an E-cycle event for our community on April 28. In the second category: Energy, 8th grade students researched alternative energy sources and presented their findings to their peers. Middle School students will be participating in a solar cooking demonstration for “Science Day” in May. And the school will be hosting alternative energy speakers for middle school students. The Environment is the third category. Students are actively studying and promoting the health of the Great Lakes watershed. Middle school students will be completing a unit of study about environmental issues this spring. Plans are underway for a native plant/flower garden on school grounds. All students study the local/native plants in the school’s pond area, with middle schoolers identifying and marking plants on our nature trail. Students also build and install bird, duck, and bat houses on the school grounds. And finally, in the Miscellaneous Projects, eight additional activities were entered: An endangered animal (the Panda bear) was adopted as part of the March is Reading Month events. Students read about the Panda, and held a fundraiser on its behalf. The Middle School Green Club is planning on a number of Earth Day events for the school. First graders are preparing a environmentally-themed Readers’ Theater for Earth Day. Second graders plan similar activities for Earth Day. Most grades will be participating in an Earth Day poster program. Environmentally-themed books was also part of the March is Reading Month plans. Several of our middle school students entered the 2011 Sooper Yooper Environmental Art Contest and were awarded honors for their work. And finally: our computers “Click for the Rainforest”at http://www.care2.com/click-to-donate/rainforest/. A Michigan Green School flag is displayed in the main hallway of the school, reminding all of us not only the honor, but also our continued obligation to faithful stewardship of our planet.
