September Fall News

Reading: We  read Plaidypus Lost in which we saw how the girl kept losing her plaidypus and would then find him again.  He changed from the beginning to the end of the story.  We learned about opposites by reading this story like: left, right, up, down, lost, found. We learned more about characters and the setting of  a story.  Our new sight words are: little and the.  We read the sight word story Little Me!, practice reading it at home, pointing to the words as you read it. Our letters this week  are Oo-Ss. Next week we will finish the letters, then we will focus on one letter a week.

Math:  Numbers 4 and 5 is what we practiced this week. We learned the number poem, counted sets of objects,  and drew in a ten frame.  We also learned different numbers that make the number 5 like 3 and 2, 4 and 1.  Next week we will learn about the number 0 and have a test on numbers 0 to 5.  We did a counting collections as a class, but this week the students made an estimate, recorded the counting and the number of objects.  Next week we are going to try a counting collections with a partner.

Religion:  St. Patrick helped us to learn about the Holy Trinity with using the shamrock to represent the Father, Son and Holy Spirit.  We learned how the Trinity is a mystery as three persons make one.  We practiced the Sign of the Cross, using our right hands.

Science:   The season of Fall. We read There Was An Old Lady Who Swallowed Some Leaves in which the items she swallowed all became a scarecrow.  We read Autumn Leaves are Falling, Little Critter Fall Festival, Under the Apple Tree.  We painted our hands and arm to make a tree and then added constructions paper to make the leaves.  We made a list of things we like to do in the Fall and drew a picture.

STREAMApple Science  in which we made a predictions, observed and recorded our results. We learned that an apple can float in a bowl of water but apple seeds sink. We discussed how is it okay if our prediction did not match what happened as we observe and find out the results.  Next week we will have more apple science.
