Middle School Updates

5th Grade
Religion: We spent last week exploring different saints and what we can learn from them. We will be finishing up with our project this week and then we will return to our investigation into Baptism. We will explore the signs, symbols, and rituals of Baptism through sacred art and the Bible.
History: We were in History Centers this week. Students wrote and illustrated History Poems, worked on Vocabulary, Mapping Skills, and read informational text – highlighting context, answering questions, and writing critical thinking questions. Join us on Monday, November 25, 2019, from 1:00 – 3:00 pm in the gym as grades 5th – 8th present a “Historical Time Warp.” More details to follow.
Language Arts: We will continue exploring the fantasy genre and its different elements and strengthening our comprehension skills by making connections between the text and our-self, the text and other texts, or the text and the world. We are also practicing our vocabulary by incorporating new words into our conversations, as well as, identifying words as they are used in other content areas.
Science: We are reviewing the motions of the Earth, as well as how stars are formed and why we see different constellations.
Math: We are continuing to strengthen our division skills and our strategies for solving word problems. This requires us to pay close attention to details and we have to logically think about the problem. Some of us are working with decimals and fractions.

6th Grade
Religion: In religion this week, we talked about foreshadowing and looked at how different events in the New Testament were foreshadowed in the Old Testament. We also studied a new piece of sacred art to see how the artist depicted the story of Jonah and the whale.
History: In geography this week, the sixth graders researched different world climate zones and presented a slideshow on the information. We also learned about environments and biomes. Next week, we will begin our month long country study unit where each student will choose a different country to research, learning about its geography and culture. This unit will culminate on November 25 with the History Showcase. Look for more information to come home with your student next week.
Language Arts: We continue to spend time each day reading in class so the 6th graders get closer to their weekly reading goal. Please make sure they are reading each night at home so they are able to accomplish their goal. On Thursday, we began presentations of the students’ identity bags. It was so fun to learn more about the 6th graders! To celebrate Dia de Los Muertos, we watched Coco on Friday afternoon. The 6th graders will be writing a short paper (3 paragraphs-due Tuesday, November 5) comparing the movie with research that they completed the beginning of the week. They are looking to see if the movie is culturally accurate.
Science: We are beginning our study of the human body systems, looking at how the body’s that God gave us are infinitely better than anything we could design ourselves. This week focuses on the skeletal system.
Math: We are practicing our problem-solving skills as we deal with real-world situations and word problems. Some of us are going to be exploring integers and how this applies to the coordinate plane. Students should continue to practice their skills nightly online if they do not have homework from class.

7th Grade
Religion: We are continuing to study Salvation History, reviewing how the Bible has presented us with God’s revelation of his love to humanity and to each student. We are working through Abraham this week with students researching and presenting each topic.
History: This week, the 7th graders did some research on a specific country in the Arabian Peninsula in small groups. They looked at the geography and culture of the country and then presented their research to the class. Next week, we will begin our month-long unit on Ancient Egypt. Similar to our mythology unit last year, this unit will culminate with our History Showcase on November 25. Look for more information to come home about this next week!
Language Arts: Students wrote, illustrated and submitted poetry to Poetic Power, read and answered comprehension questions on CommonLit, completed their Reading Projects, and wrote a paper titled My Faith. We are officially kicking-off the Corpus Christi Historical Time Warp – see information below.
Science: We are beginning our study of the human body systems, looking at how the body’s that God gave us are infinitely better than anything we could design ourselves. This week focuses on the skeletal system.
Math: We are exploring the relationship between ratios, rates, and percents and how this is applied to scale drawings and the real world. Others of us are working on strengthening our algebraic skills as they apply to real-world situations. Students should continue to practice their skills nightly online if they do not have homework from class.
