Middle School Weekly 9/29/19

Middle School Updates

5th Grade

  • Religion: We will be reviewing what Scripture tells us about God, Grace, and the Kingdom of Heaven. We will also begin a brief overview of the Seven Sacraments that are the focus of 5th grade.
  • History: We continue to learn about the Native American Tribes of North and South America. We are coming to an end and the students will be given their Native American Mural Projects next week. We also celebrated US Constitution Day last week with guest speakers. Mrs. Reenders and Mrs. Franklin from the Ottawa County Courts visited and spoke with students about the importance of our “Laws of the Land” ~ the United States Constitution.
  • Language Arts: We will be finishing up Save Me A Seat and discussing how point of view and perspective influence text. We will also be working through Unit 3 of the vocabulary book to continue strengthening our word skills. We will continue building up our writing stamina and identifying common errors that impact our writing. Students should be reviewing their vocabulary words nightly on Quizlet or Spelling City.
  • Science: We are looking at how even the simplest of experiments requires carefully followed steps and meticulous measurements.  We will discuss graphing and looking for trends, along with sharing our data and looking for improvements in this upcoming week
  • Math: We are continuing to reinforce our understanding of place value and how this can help us to ensure accurate computation in multiplication and division. Students should be reviewing their computation skills nightly.

6th Grade

  • Religion:  We have been talking about Scripture and its different uses.  We learned that it can be used to teach, to correct, to refute, and to lead us on the path to righteousness.  We have also been discussing how God reveals himself to us through Scripture. It is our responsibility to read the Bible in the hopes of building a stronger relationship with God.
  • History:  We have been studying the basics of geography these past few weeks including the differences between physical and human geography, different tools geographers use, and different ways to see the world (maps and globes).  This week we have been focusing on how to read maps and finding the exact location of certain places by using latitude and longitude. The 6th graders will be having their first test in geography next week.
  • Language Arts:  We continue to spend time each day reading in class so the 6th graders get closer to their weekly reading goal.  Each student has a different goal, and they are also expected to read each night at home so they are able to accomplish this goal.  After reading, they respond to a prompt in their reading journal. This allows me to see their comprehension skills as well as their writing skills.  We are also in the process of writing narratives. The goal for this story is to include some personification, or giving human characteristics to a nonhuman object.
  • Science: We are looking at different types of cells, and how plant and animal cell complexity is due to the number of roles that the organism has compared to a bacteria.  Students are working on projects that compare the cell to a factory, school, mall, or location of their choice to look at how the functions of each part work together to create a product.
  • Math:We are reviewing operations with rational numbers and beginning to explore algebraic expressions. Students should be reviewing their computations skills nightly.

7th Grade

  • Religion: We are studying how God reveals Himself and His love to humanity through stories in the Bible- Adam and Eve, Cain and Abel, Noah’s Ark thus far, with Abraham as our next study.

  • History:  The 7th graders took their first history test this week.  Our next chapter is looking at different ancient religions such as Judaism, Christianity, and Islam.  They started the chapter by doing some basic research and comparing the religions. Next week, we will begin to study them more in depth.
  • Language Arts: ~ Our first book Where the Red Fern Grows by Wilson Rawls is coming to an end. Our curriculum has included: character development, themes, comprehension questions, vocabulary, and art projects. This book is a real tear-jerker. We are also working on Autobiographical essays ~
  • Science: We are looking at different types of cells, and how plant and animal cell complexity is due to the number of roles that the organism has compared to a bacteria.  Students are working on projects that compare the cell to a factory, school, mall, or location of their choice to look at how the functions of each part work together to create a product.
  • Math: We are reviewing operations with rational numbers and simplifying algebraic expressions. Students should be reviewing their computation skills nightly.

8th Grade

  • Religion: We are studying how God reveals Himself and His love to humanity through stories in the Bible- Adam and Eve, Cain and Abel, Noah’s Ark thus far, with Abraham as our next study.
  • History: We celebrated US Constitution Day last week with guest speakers. Mrs. Reenders and Mrs. Franklin from the Ottawa County Courts visited and spoke with students about the importance of our “Laws of the Land” ~ the United States Constitution. Our curriculum is also including the Constitutional Convention, Declaration of Independence, Sugar Act, Stamp Act, and the Boston Massacre ~ can you guess what we are leading up to?
  • Language Arts: ~We have completed Towers Falling by Jewell Parker Rhodes and have begun Animal Farm by George Orwell. The 8th grade had a tough decision to make ~ who would they consider “My Personal Michigan Hero.” Thanks to State Farm Insurance, we once again are participating in the My Personal Michigan Hero Essay Contest. Do you know who your son/daughter has chosen for their essay?
  • Science: We are looking at how large the solar system is and what it is made up of by having the students create a cruise that will take passengers on a trip to 3 different planets with viable excursions occuring on each planet, based on the planets characteristics.  We will be reviewing scale models this week and creating a scale model to take a younger grade on a solar system walk.
  • Math: We are reviewing rational numbers through the process of solving one-step equations. Students should be reviewing their skills nightly on Freckle or Khan Academy.
