Middle School Updates

Week Ending November 9, 2019

5th Grade

  • Religion: We are continuing our investigation into Baptism. We began discussing the signs, symbols, and rituals of Baptism that are expressing through sacred art and the Bible. We are going to focus on the Baptism of Jesus and how this is a model for us, as well as, how Baptism relates to our Salvation History.
  • History: In History, we finish Module 2 ~ Exploring America, and have been reviewing for the test we took today. We also kicked off CC Historical Time Warp.
  • Language Arts: We finished reading our fantasy novel and we are going to compare and contrast story elements with the previous book that we read. We are continuing the integration of our vocabulary into all content areas, and we are working through proofreading and editing our persuasive essays.
  • Science: We are reviewing the motions of the Earth, as well as how stars are formed and why we see different constellations.
  • Math: We are continuing to strengthen our strategies for solving word problems. We are focusing on key terms that help to indicate what steps to take to solve the problems. Some of us are working with decimals and others are exploring graphing.

6th Grade

  • Religion:  In religion this week, we talked about the inspiration of the Bible, discussing that even though human authors wrote the Bible using their own abilities, they were inspired by God.  We also looked at the different styles that books of the Bible were written in such as narrative, poetry, apocalyptic, and prophetic.
  • History:  I introduced our Country Study project to the 6th graders this week, and we began doing some research.  This is a very intensive project that spans the month of November and culminates on November 25 with our big History Showcase.  This study is made up of multiple projects, each with its own due date. It is essential that the 6th graders manage their time well in order to get all projects completed on time.  We will be spending the bulk of our class time working on these projects; however, your child should be working on these projects at home, as well. Your child has a detailed rubric that outlines the expectations and due dates.
  • Language Arts:  In Language Arts this week, we reviewed how to write a correct paragraph.  This will come in handy as they begin to work on the essays for their Country Study.  Language arts will combine with social studies this next month as there are several writing pieces in this project, as well.
  • Science: We are beginning our study of the human body systems, looking at how the body’s that God gave us are infinitely better than anything we could design ourselves.  This week focuses on the skeletal system.
  • Math: We are exploring algebraic expressions and properties of mathematics as it applies to simplifying and evaluating expressions. Others of us are applying problem-solving skills to find solutions to word problems. A few of us are going to be exploring equations and how this relates to what we already know about expressions.

7th Grade

  • Religion: We are continuing to study Salvation History, reviewing how the Bible has presented us with God’s revelation of his love to humanity and to each student.  We are working through Abraham this week with students researching and presenting each topic.
  • History:  This week, the 7th graders began their month long study of Ancient Egypt that will culminate with the History Showcase Time Warp on November 25.  This is a very intensive unit complete with numerous projects and multiple deadlines. We will spend much of our class time this month working on these projects; however, your child should be working on his projects at home, as well.  Mark your calendar!
  • Language Arts:  This week, 7th also kicked-off CC Historical Time Warp ~ worked on Vocabulary, reading a short story The Landlady by Roald Dahl, wrote a 5 paragraph synopsis on an article from the Scope Magazine, and did critical thinking puzzles. What a busy week~
  • Science: We are beginning our study of the human body systems, looking at how the body’s that God gave us are infinitely better than anything we could design ourselves.  This week focuses on the skeletal system.
  • Math: We are strengthening our algebraic skills as they apply to real-world situations. Others of us are working with inequalities and the real world. Others of us are applying our skills to working with ratios and proportions to solve for the missing value. Students should continue to practice their skills nightly online if they do not have homework from class.

  • Science: Students are looking at relationships of the Sun, Moon, and Earth, creating models to give demonstrations of these relationships.

  • Math: We are creating artwork that represents the various transformations that we have been practicing. Some of us will begin working with similar figures and discovering the relationship between the perimeter and area of similar figures. The rest of us will be exploring the relationship between relations, linear equations, and functions. Students should continue to practice their skills nightly online if they do not have homework from class.
