February Kindergarten Update

Reading:  One Little Mouse showed us that the best home for the mouse is the one he began with.  We drew a picture of the mouse and wrote a sentence using a capital letter at the beginning, finger spaces between words, punctuation at the end and our inventive spelling of sounding out the words.  We learned about letter blends where the two letters work together to make one sound like in sl, cl, bl, br, tr, st, sp,.  Our sight words are:  one, two, three, four and five.

Math: We have been practicing our counting skills to 100 by 1’s and 10’s.  We also have been comparing numbers as greater than and less than with number over 20.  We solved riddles like I am greater than 23 but less than 25 to figure out the number is 24.  Try some at home.  We will finish numbers beyond 20 next week and begin to learn about 2D shapes.

Religion;  The church season of Lent taught us that the color is purple for preparation, Ash Wednesday is the beginning of Lent.   Your child can fill in their 40 days of Lent chart at home  by marking it each time they pray, fast or help the poor. These charts do not need to come back to school.  We will participate in a Lenten Retreat at school on Monday with 1st-4th grades.

Science:  We began a unit on the weather.  We read It Looked Like Spilt Milk and Little Cloud.  In both stories we saw the clouds could make different shapes.  We made our own pictures with blue paper and white paint. We than had to decide what our cloud looked like.  They are hanging up in our classroom.  We learned how the sun changes positions in the morning, afternoon and night time.  We drew a picture of what we like to do on a sunny day and wrote a sentence.

March is Reading Month:  We will be decorating our classroom door next week.  We still  need more Guest Readers for March. Let me know if you would like to read to us!
