Gingerbread News in Kindergarten

We have enjoyed reading several Gingerbread Man stories.   We liked Jan Brett’s stories of the Gingerbread Baby and Gingerbread Friends in which the gingerbread was not eaten by the fox.  The students helped to read the stories as they would say Run, Run, as fast as you can, you can’t catch me, I’m the Gingerbread Man. The Gingerbread Girl showed us how she tricked the fox and he became her friend. We read and colored in a book of the Gingerbread Man, enjoy reading it at home.  We also came up with our own ending of the story.  Next week we will make Gingerbread houses.  I still need a couple of volunteers for Wednesday, December 18 at 1:30.  Let me know if you can help us.

Reading: Little Quack taught us how to be brave and willing to try something new as he learned to swim in the pond with his mom, brothers, and sisters.  The story also had addition in it as we added each time a duckling went into the pond.  Our letter this week is Rr. We practiced printing it as well as its sound.  Our sight words are:  me, she, with.  Keep practicing those sight words.  Verbs are the action of the sentence,we matched up verbs to pictures.  We also learned about verbs in the present and the past like jump becomes jumps or jumped.

Math:  We practiced graphing with gingerbread pictures, Skittles, and Christmas erasers.  We sorted the Skittles by colors, graphed them and counted them. We then answered questions about our graph.  We practiced addition with dominoes.  We also counted by 10’s and wrote the missing numbers.

Religion: Mary is Jesus’ Mother. We looked at a picture of Madonna and Child in which we saw Mary and Jesus as a baby.  We learned  that Mary is Jesus’ Mother but also our Mother too.  We learned about St. Teresa of Calcutta and the prayer she would say to Mary when she stressed.  We heard the story of the Annunciation and colored a picture of it.  In the Atrium, the children have heard this story and have interacted with it.

STREAM:  Gumdrop Christmas Trees.  We made Christmas trees out of gumdrops and toothpicks.  They enjoyed building these and then drew a picture in their journals.  We also made Christmas trees with cups and pom poms.  Next week we will explore Candy Cane Science.
