Middle School Updates

Week of December 16, 2019

 

5th Grade

  • Religion: We are investigating how Confirmation is related to our Salvation History as well as what the various rituals represent in the Sacrament of Confirmation.
  • History: This week we continued to work on Module 3 – the English Colonies. We continue to practice taking notes, using vocabulary and understanding the life of early colonists.
  • Language Arts: We are practicing for the Spelling Bee. The word lists are linked above. All students participate in the Spelling Bee. We are continuing to practice various reading strategies to help build meaning and comprehension.
  • Science: We will be reviewing Earth’s Spheres, with a focus on the hydrosphere and where we find water on Earth. 
  • Math: We are continuing to work with decimals in various forms and operations. We have been comparing, ordering, adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing. The students are applying these skills to their check registers to ensure that their checkbooks are balanced.

 

6th Grade

  • Religion:  In religion this week, we have been talking about covenants and different covenants that God made with different people.  We also talked about salvation history and how it is a love story between God and us.  
  • History:  This week, we discussed migration, and the 6th graders presented their projects.  They researched different significant migrations in history. They did a great job with their research!
  • Language Arts:  In language arts this week, the 6th graders finished their persuasive essays and peer edited with a partner.  Their final drafts of their essays are due on Monday.  
  • Science: We are beginning our study of the human body systems, looking at how the body’s that God gave us are infinitely better than anything we could design ourselves.  This week focuses on the digestive system.
  • Math:Everyone has received their exam study guides. The math exam will be on Thursday, January 16, 2020. We will be working through the exams this week and the week after Christmas break. Students should be studying over break.

 

7th Grade

  • Religion: We are continuing to study Salvation History, reviewing how the Bible has presented us with God’s revelation of his love to humanity and to each student.  We are working through Kings this week with students researching and presenting each topic.  
  • History:  In social studies this week, the 7th graders completed a chapter review and participated in a review game to prepare for their test.  They took chapter 8 test today. Next week, we will begin looking at the exam review that was passed out today.
  • Language Arts:  We continue to read The Gift of the Magi by O. Henry. Our time has been filled with Reading, writing Kahoots, Vocabulary, creating Storyboards and Flow Charts, and making Christmas Cards for the residence of Freedom Village.
  • Science: We are beginning our study of the human body systems, looking at how the body’s that God gave us are infinitely better than anything we could design ourselves.  This week focuses on the digestive system.

8th Grade

  • Language ArtsWe began reading ReStart by Gordon Korman. Our time has been filled with Reading, creating Storyboards, Vocabulary, working on Common Lit, and making Christmas Cards for the residence of Freedom Village.
  • History: Students continue to work through Module 6 — Citizenship. Class time includes discussion, vocabulary, comprehension checks, note-taking, and reading.
  • Science: Students are studying the causes of volcanoes, earthquakes, and tsunamis to better understand the movement of tectonic plates.  
  • Math: Everyone has received their exam study guides. The math exam will be on Thursday, January 16, 2020. We will be working through the exams this week and the week after Christmas break. Students should be studying over break.
